Does Shopping Multiple Mortgage Lenders Hurt Your Credit? Reddit Says 14, 30 or 45 Days. Here's Which One Applies

Ask on r/FirstTimeHomeBuyer whether getting quotes from several lenders will wreck your credit, and you'll get three answers: 14 days, 30 days and 45 days. People argue about it as if only one can be right.
All three numbers are real. They just describe different parts of how credit scores treat mortgage shopping.
The three numbers, explained
FICO, the score most mortgage lenders use, treats rate shopping in two ways:
- Grouping. Several mortgage inquiries inside a short window count as one. On older FICO versions the window is 14 days. On newer versions it's 45 days.
- A 30-day grace period. FICO ignores mortgage inquiries that are less than 30 days old. So the inquiries you rack up this week won't affect a score pulled in that same month.
VantageScore uses a 14-day window as well.
Which one is safe
Thirty days. FICO ignores mortgage inquiries that are less than 30 days old. Get every quote within 30 days of the first credit pull, and those inquiries won't affect the score your lender uses for this loan.
After 30 days, the inquiries start to count, and how they're grouped depends on the score version: 14 days on older FICO versions, 45 on newer ones. Even then, the effect is usually only a few points.
What Reddit gets right
Shop. The score impact of comparing lenders is small and short-lived. The difference between two lenders' pricing on the same day can easily be worth thousands over the life of a loan.
Also, a pre-qualification often needs only a soft pull, which doesn't affect your score. A full pre-approval usually needs a hard pull. Our pre-approval vs. pre-qualification guide explains the difference.
The flood of calls: what changed in 2026
For years, the most common complaint after a mortgage credit pull was the wave of calls and texts from other lenders. Those came from "trigger leads," which credit bureaus sold the moment a mortgage inquiry appeared.
The federal Homebuyers Privacy Protection Act took effect on March 5, 2026, and sharply restricts that practice. Bureaus can now share that data only in narrow cases, such as with your current mortgage servicer or a bank where you already have an account, or if you opted in. Older Reddit threads about being bombarded are describing the rules before that change.
How I'd shop
- Pick two or three lenders, including at least one broker who can compare multiple wholesale lenders.
- Ask each for an official Loan Estimate on the same day, for the same loan amount and lock period.
- Compare Section A (origination charges) and the rate, not just the rate.
- Get every quote that needs a credit pull within 30 days of the first one.

FAQ
How many points does a mortgage credit inquiry cost?
For most people, one inquiry costs fewer than five points, according to FICO. Multiple mortgage inquiries in the shopping window count as one.
Is the mortgage rate-shopping window 14, 30 or 45 days?
Plan on 30. FICO ignores mortgage inquiries for their first 30 days, so quotes gathered in that span won't affect the score used for your loan. After that, older FICO versions group inquiries within 14 days and newer versions within 45.
Does a pre-qualification hurt my credit?
Many pre-qualifications use a soft pull, which doesn't affect your score. Ask the lender before you authorize anything.
Why did I get so many calls after applying for a mortgage?
That was usually trigger leads. Since March 5, 2026, federal law restricts credit bureaus from selling that data to companies you don't already have a relationship with.
